Nottingham Group

Part of the East Midland Centre
The History of the Nottingham Group
The Group was formed at an Inaugural Meeting on 12th April 1937 at the Elite Cinema and had organised social runs, annual dinners, gymkhanas etc., including a National Gymkhana at Castle Donington in 1938, when the introduction of wartime petrol rationing caused activities to be suspended in 1939.
Group activities were resumed in 1946 after the end of WW2.and still continue to thrive.

Always an active group within the East Midland Centre, its members have regularly served as Centre Officers. The Group also has a distinguished record of many of its members providing service at HQ level, on the Board, GPC (now General Council), Specialist Committees, sub committees and panels.

Organised activities have included, Social runs, Dinners, Dinner Dances, Weekends at Eaves Hall, Works visits, Outings, Gymkhanas, Production Car Trials, 12 Car Rallies, Road Rallies, Driving Tests, Treasure Hunts and Camping and Caravanning Rallies. Group members have competed on many Local events, for the Spring Shield and Livermore Trophies, as well as National and International events.

In 1966, Group Sec., Deryck Smith was CSMA Team Manager on the RAC Rally.

In 1967, committee member Robert Clark devised a method of compiling Car Rally results which enabled a leader board to display competitor’s positions at any given time, in addition to the finish. With Deryck Smith and Harold Palin, Robert formed a “results team”, to provide a Rally Results Service to other groups and other motor clubs. Early use on the Tour of Dean, Nutcracker and Mintex rallies produced glowing reports about the service in the national “Motoring News”. This results team has evolved and become the East Midland Marshalling Team, whose expertise has been widely recognized and has a reputation for providing a first class service on National and International Rallies.

In 1970, Group Chairman, Harold Palin was instrumental in the formation of the HQ Camping and Caravanning Section, serving on the investigative Sub-Committee (formed by the GPC) in July and attending the inaugural meeting in October.

In 1976, Deryck Smith, assisted by Norman Higginson, organised the first HQ International Camping and Caravanning Rally in Luxembourg. As a tribute to Deryck, a 25th Anniversary Rally was held on the same site in Luxembourg in 2001, organised by Norman, assisted by East Midland C&C coordinator, Terry Kirby of Lincoln Group.

The regular Nottingham Group Club Nights, which have covered a wide variety of subjects with talks, slide shows, table top rallies, quizzes, competitions, demonstrations and exhibitions, continue to be very popular.
